Synthetic Marijuana Deaths: Statistically Zero

Since 2007, literally tens of thousands of people have smoked synthetic marijuana. Many of them teenagers. It's legal in most states and for sale everywhere on the internet. Researchers have found that the most common side effects of synthetic marijuana are rapid heartbeat, agitation, drowsiness, vomiting, hallucinations and nausea.

Of all those thousands and thousands of users, four people have died, that we've found so far. The four are Lamar JackNicholasKelvin Melton, and Steven Valdez.

Several suicides have been blamed on synthetic mj, but those details are sketchy. No one can say with any certainty (or they would have) whether synthetic marijuana was the cause of death, a contributing factor or simply a circumstance of the event. It is blamed, nonetheless.

In Response to the Herald-Leader's Article 10/14/12:

In Friday's article regarding last August's police raid on The Botany Bay on Winchester Road, the Herald-Leader got a number of things wrong. Again.

1. "According to court documents, police found more than 7 pounds of synthetic cannabinoids at The Botany Bay."

Court documents said that? I've seen the affidavit and the search warrant and see no mention... Keep reading here...

Policing for Profit: Facts About the Botany Bay Raid, Lexington Kentucky

On August 15th, around noon, the Lexington police department stormed into The Botany Bay with about 10 officers to conduct a seizure that was triggered by certain products the government claims are illegal.

Only one officer was in uniform. The others were in plain clothes or decked out in SWAT gear. They refused to show identification to witnesses. When one witness asked how he would know they were police officers, he was told, "You don't."

The shop was open for business. No employee or customer was armed or the least bit dangerous. Here are some facts:

1. There is a state law that is pretty fuzzy. It lists several specific compounds as illegal, then basically says, "and whatever else we decide." This is completely unconstitutional as no one can possibly comply with "whatever we decide."

2. The owner of this business has worked diligently and spent thousands of dollars to comply with the law. The law is clear regarding intent. But when the police were presented with evidence of the business owner's good faith attempts to comply with the law, the cops ignored that and continued to loot and pillage. Keep reading...

I'd Like to Report a Crime: Predatory Law Enforcement Actions in Lexington

I witnessed an armed robbery in broad daylight. The thieves were bold, armed, wore no masks, didn’t hurry. They weren’t afraid of being caught. Although, it turned out they sure didn’t want anyone watching.

The Herald-Leader reported this robbery. They got a couple of facts wrong, starting with calling the looting of a retail store an “enforcement action.” To the handful of us recording the siege, it was hard to distinguish this “enforcement action” from a 7/11 smash and grab.

botany bay winchester road lexington kentucky policing for profitI arrived just after nine grown men had swarmed into the Botany Bay on Winchester Road. After they handcuffed the four young unarmed employees, aged 18 to 24, the looting began.

Much of it is on video shot through the front window. The entire raid would have been recorded except that the first thing the vandals did was rip out the security cameras. (They also stole the modem and router. Why? Did they feel compelled to further punish the tax-paying law-abiding business owner? They appeared to be all in for that enforcement action.)

The safe was open so they took the few hundred dollars there. They must have been disappointed they didn’t get to actually break into the safe because they destroyed it anyway. Keep reading here...
